Backdrops are an essential part of most videography and film making. Sooner or later the shooter will encounter a situation where they need some sort of "background" to put their subject in front of that is perhaps less busy or better contrasts the desired look of the scene. Or perhaps using a scenic backdrop is simply more cost effective than actually shooting the scene in the actual geographical location needed.
Scenic Backdrops have been used in the motion picture and television industry for years to create the illusion of grandiose landscapes, cityscapes, or environments all the while being big flat paintings. Used properly the audience seldom realizes they have been tricked. Remember the beginning of Austin Powers Gold Member?

Paper or Cloth?
Both materials have their best suited application and it would not be fair to say that one material is better than another. In fact each possesses unique desirable traits depending on the application.
Cloth Backdrops
Cloth Backdrops offer the ability to "drape" creating contrast textures and a more obvious background component. Additionally, Cloth allows the manufacturer to apply a plethora of dying techniques to create many different types of visual effects and patterns.Cloth is also easier to work with in large sizes. Paper will crease if not handled with the utmost care to avoid bending at all times. 100% Cotton Cloth is easy to work with. Wrinkles and creases can be dealt with very easily in most cases.
